  19. mail games, both ordinary mail and electronic mail, and both wargames
  20. and non-wargames.

  34. 1) What is PBM all about?
  35.  
  36. PBM stands for "play by mail". Since this IS the Internet, we use it
  37. to mean both ordinary postal mail and electronic mail. Games like
  38. Diplomacy have been played via postal mail for many years. The US
  39. commercial PBM market was started by Rick Loomis of Flying Buffalo in
  40. the early 1970's. Now there are commercial PBM companies all over the
  41. world. In addition, there is some activity in role-playing games via
  42. mail.

  44. Why play PBM games? Well, even though the commercial games are
  45. expensive, they offer some things that some people have a hard time
  46. finding face to face -- good opponents, convenient playing times, and
  47. games with lots of hidden information. Non-commercial games can offer
  48. the same benefit, as long as the people running it are dedicated.

  52. 2) What games get talked about here?

  54. Many postings on this group will have a game name mentioned in the
  55. subject line. If you post, please mention the game in the subject so
  56. that others who are interested in the same game will actually read
  57. your postings. Some of the most mentioned games are:

  59. Adventurer's Guild (AG): a commercial fantasy arena combat game.
  60.                          It has its own FAQ posting.

  62. Arena: a free PBeM written by Scott Turner; fantasy arena combat.
  63.  
  64. Galaxy: a free PBeM written by Russell Wallace, with a space setting.
  65.  
  66. Legends: a commercial D&D-type simulation in which 200 players
  67.          wander around a large map trying to become more powerful.
  68.  
  69. Duelmasters (DM): a commercial fantasy arena combat game.
  70.  
  71. Diplomacy: a boardgame often played by email. Discussion for this
  72.            game generally takes place in the group rec.games.diplomacy.

  74. Middle Earth (ME-PBM): a commercial strategic simulation of J. R. R.
  75.                        Tolkein's fantasy universe.

  77. Monster Island: a simple commercial game in which player characters
  78.                 wander around an island farting and hitting on each
  79.                 other.

  81. Olympia II: a free PBeM by Rich Skrenta, with a fantasy
  82.             setting. Currently in alpha-test.

  84. Atlantis: a free PBeM by Russell Wallace; a strategic fantasy game.

  91. 3) Are there any mailing lists for pbm games?

  93. The commercial game Duelmasters has a mailing list. To join, send mail
  94. to dm-request@cumbnd.bioc.columbia.edu.

  96. The free game Galaxy has an automated mailing list which announces
  97. game openings. FTP & read the rules before you join -- see the PBM
  98. List in part (4) for details about this. The mailing list has an
  99. address of "galaxy-request@acca.nmsu.edu" -- send it email with the
  100. word "help" in the subject, and it will explain how to join the list.

  102. The commercial game Middle Earth (ME-PBM) has a mailing list. The
  103. human who runs it is kazandar@aol.com.

  105. The commercial game Monster Island has a mailing list with about 100
  106. players on it. The list is run by a human; his address is
  107. warden@triton.unm.edu.

  113. I post a large list of games separately around the 1st and 15th day of
  114. every month, or you an ftp the list from ftp.erg.sri.com. The list
  115. includes both commercial and free games, including information about
  116. all of the free play-by-email games mentioned in question (2). This
  117. ftp site contains a lot of other pbm related information.

  157. For those of you who DON'T have ftp access, Frits Kuijlman has the
  158. Squirrel mail server installed at his FTP site. This mail server can
  159. be used through mail or interactively, but all requests will be
  160. handled through mail. To get the helpfile either:

  182. If you live in the USA, you can sign up with any one of a large number
  183. of nationwide commercial services that provide excellent Internet
  184. email connectivity. In particular, GEnie, America Online, and Delphi
  185. all provide email to the Internet at no extra charge. Compu$erve has
  186. an extra charge, and I think Prodigy does also.

  188. In addition to these, there are a lot of smaller, some local, services
  189. that provide internet email. You can ftp a list of these services via
  190. ftp from VFL.Paramax.COM /pub/pubnet/nixpub.long or via email by
  191. sending email to mail-server@bts.com with the body of the message
  192. containing:

  202. Yes! There is a newsgroup de.alt.games.pbem with some interesting
  203. things going on, but it's all in German. Some German-language games
  204. are included in the PBM List mentioned in section (3) above.
